The Safety is a position that’s come into vogue in recent years. A player like LaRon Landry is just the most recent of those whom have become integral keys to the defense. However, the depth is minimal if you don’t shift an Antoine Cason, a Charles Godfrey, or a Reggie Smith from cornerback. And I don’t. So there.
Kenny Phillips (SS-Miami Fla.)
6’2″ 212 4.52
If you’re looking for a hammer? Miami is usually the best place to look. From Bennie Blades to Brandon Meriweather, the U has a history of bad motherfuckers who fly around and destroy everything in their wake. Mr. Phillips is not that sort of player. It’s not to say he won’t hit?
He’s just more of a cover safety. Because the man’s coverage is indeed worthy. He’s good at covering his responsibility and is light on his feet as well. In fact? An enterprising team could probably use him as an emergency cornerback. And because I don’t call him a boom king doesn’t mean he won’t hit. He’s just cornerback in safety clothing.
But he’ll never be a speedburner. If you beat him, he will stay beat. And with his tendencies to get caught up in the playfakes? He will get beat. Instinctually, the man could have used another year in college.
WHY might he be the 30th pick in the draft? Because the Giants could use a safety with his shills and the Packers love to trade down. (Unless the Chargers say to themselves that they need this man.)
DaJuan Morgan (FS-North Carolina State)
6’0″ 205 4.54
DaJuan Morgan has all the requisite capability to be a boom king. He has the coverage skills and acceleration necessary to cover the deep third as well as the knowledge to jump the short routes. He could cover a receiver one on one. He can be a special teams ace. As football prospects go, his intangibles are the ginchiest.
He just doesn’t have the experience. He can get out of control. He will freelance. He does have the boom king’s lament (He does not secure tackles.) And if he does join a weaker team, he will overextend himself and attempt to do everything.
WHY could he be the better value? It’s the same old story. Phillips has more polish, but 30 Helens Agree that DaJuan Morgan has the upside.
Also, that love Hurts.
Anyway, there are some who would consider Marcellus “Tyrell” Johnson as a sleeper. I do not. Safeties without coverage skills have issues succeeding in the pros. He lacks them. He is Adam Archuleta with a cooler name.
Good looking out, and there’s more to come.
