The Grand National Championships

I am a bad interviewer.

But that kind of goes without saying, I’ve interviewed two people.

But here’s the thing. In addition to my inexperience. I’m also lazy. How so lazy?

Because Mr. Matt Fraction gave me an opportunity to ask some follow up questions and dig deeper. And I did not read into his comments about how he’s worked with nothing but awesome artists as a good segue to go into his earliest work.

Why is your boy being so wistful? Because your boy just read The Annotated Mantooth.

And in this book so many questions popped into my head? Can you take credit for the styilistic influence of Warren Ellis’ Nextwave? How could an aspiring writer make his profanity so creative? Is Ron jeremy the Nikola Tesla of porn? And so much more.

The book is simply beatiful. What if James Bond was a monkey? And what if Ian Fleming was drunk when he wrote it? And while it might be a little more alternative than the tastes of the Average comics fan, getting this graphic novel comes with prose. Awesome purple prose.

I give this book my highest recommendation. Buy it or Zombie Steven Hawking will eat you.

The Grand National Interview: Marvelous Matt Fraction.

Matt Fraction is a man with the ability to bend your mind. From his creator owned books “The Five Fists of Science” and “Casanova” to his current runs on “The Immortal Iron Fist” and “Punisher: War Journal” to upcoming runs on “The Invincible Iron Man” and “Uncanny X-Men,” whether with Ed Brubaker or by himself, Matt Fraction is giving you some of the best stories in comics.

And luckily, Matt was nice enough to take time out of his busy schedule, to answer some questions about his works, Hollywood, the Chicago Cubs, Mr. Belvedere, and the craziest very special episode you ever won’t see.

And you’ve got to respect a man who’s been photographed sporting such a rockin’ beard.

The questions begin…AFTER THE JUMP!

I know I have made mention of my love of comics previously.

It may have been a long time ago, but here’s the thing. I dropped off the normal comics radar when Marvel Comic bumped its price for most of its comics to 3.99.

It is a bit of a shame, because there’s gold in them there hills, but when you cost more than going to the Movie Gallery and renting a DVD? You lose the right to my money. However! Every so often I will buy a trade paperback. And even less often? It becomes one of those things that I recommend.

And even less often? It’s a must-read without fear of losing your street cred.

Casanova is one of those comics.

Written by Matt Fraction, with swanky art by Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon, Casanova is the story of renowned thief Casanova Quinn, whos father’s the head of a super-spy agency and his sister is the dead super spy. And then Cass gets kidnapped from his own timeline and goes to Timeline 919 where the script is flipped. Action and adventure ensue.

Now, I’m one of those who buys a comic for the writing. Unless the art us ungoldly bad, I can work with a good story, and Matt Fraction can bring the entertainment. But the fact of the matter is, the art of Ba and Moon are the piece de resistance of this comic. They make it feel like it was a ripped from the Steranko headlines story. And they are the toppings that make this story an absolutely must read.

And yes, I am saying this is something you need to read. And you don’t have to go broke reading it. The trade for Luxuria costs 12.99 and if you’re one of those who can roll into a comic book shop? The price for Casanova is 1.99.

I’m not saying I’m a cheap bastard, I’m just saying that the experience of reading Casanova was so exciting that I felt a need to share it with the world. (Or at least those who visit here.)

Bye for now!
