The Grand National Championships

February 6, 2008

Everybody has a team that they like that’s not in their city.

Even if they root for their local sports team. There are lots of reasons as to the whys and wherefores. But it happens. This is the context as to why my brain hurts.

The Phoenix Suns traded for Shaquille O’Neal. They dealt versatile, mercurial talent Shawn Marion for him. Yes, the subjects of 7 Seconds or Less traded for a beloved, if past his prime center who uses the regular season as training camp and has a degenerative hip condition. This is a deal that reeks.

Shaquille was great, but talk to anyone who’s wearing a Moses Malone Bucks jersey or a Patrick Ewing Magic jersey, once centers reach a certain age, they fall off a cliff. Shaq is fat. Shaq is injury prone. Shaq has not been a great center for years now. He’s still good in flashes, but the days of packs and plaques are pretty much done.

He is not Superman. He is The Dark Knight Returns Batman. He will not work well with Nash and Amare. He is the Big Albatross. As a Suns fan, I am not thrilled about this.
